by Peter J. Bowler

This website makes available documents to accompany Science for All: The Popularization of Science in Early Twentieth-Century Britain by Peter J. Bowler.

  • Publishers’ Series
The series document provides a list of scientific titles in the principal series mentioned in chapter 7 of Science for All, arranged chronologically by start date for the series, then alphabetically by authors’ names.
  • Biographical Register
The register includes the names of authors active in the production of popular science literature between approximately 1900 and 1945, along with a small number of late-Victorian figures whose works were still available in the early years of the new century. The main purpose of the list is to illustrate the training and background of the writers, with a view to establishing how many had qualifications in science or were professional scientists (see chapter 12 of Science for All for an analysis).
  • Magazine Authors
The Magazine Authors list includes the names of all authors who wrote one or more articles of at least one page in length in the three most prominent popular science magazines published in Britain, 1919-1939 (for details see chapter 9 of Science for All).
