Funding for the Verdi Critical Edition
The National Endowment for the Humanities
The University of Chicago Press undertook to publish The Works of Giuseppe Verdi knowing that the edition could not be self-supporting and that funds for publication had to be sought from outside sources. Since its inception in 1979, steady and generous support for the edition has come from the National Endowment for the Humanities through renewable NEH Research Grants and, later, Scholarly Editions and Translations Grants. Starting in 1981, the late Chicago-based art and music patrons Lee and Brena Freeman and their Freeman Charitable Annuity Trust were steadfast in their support and generously provided the matching-funds portion of all subsequent NEH grants. Lee Jr. and the late Glynna Freeman have carried on their legacy through the Freeman Family Foundation. A grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation in 1982 also gave a key early contribution to the project.
Donors for the 2012 fund-raising cycle included, together with the Freeman Family Foundation, the David and Amy Fulton Foundation, the Franke Family Charitable Foundation, and the Irving Harris Foundation. The most recent fund-raising campaign was successfully completed in July 2015 and it included the following donors: Randy and Melvin Berlin, Lee Freeman Jr., Mary and Richard Gray, Amy and Paul Carbone, Julius Lewis, Ruth O’Brien and Stuart Rice, Susan Schlough and Andrew Abbott, Jason Selch, Carla and Stephen Berry, and Suzanne and Philip Gossett.
The edition is currently in the second year of a new three year NEH Scholarly Editions and Translations Grant for 2019–22.
