Fascism and the Global Far Right

A Historical View

The global challenge to democracy in historical perspective.

Fascism was a distinct movement in European history that left deep scars across the continent, but the term “fascist” is now more broadly applied to those on the political right, especially the new populists who have seized power across much of the globe in recent years. Although most far-right populists vocally disavow historic fascism, others see worrying parallels between them. Could we be witnessing a return to the fascist politics of Mussolini, Franco, and Hitler?

This book is both an assessment of the current crisis of democracy and a brief history of fascism and far-right populism around the world. Authors Maximiliano Fuentes Codera and Javier Rodrigo hope this historical approach will help readers better understand the urgent challenges faced by our democracies.

Reviews

“The rise of radical right-wing populist movements around the world in recent years has led some observers to fear the return of 1930s-style European fascism. In this carefully argued book, Fuentes Codera and Rodrigo, Spanish historians of fascism, look back at the political upheavals of interwar Europe to identify similarities and differences in old and new forms of right-wing extremism.”

G. John Ikenberry | Foreign Affairs

“This is an essential book for understanding the current anti-democratic turn. Fuentes and Rodrigo provide much-needed historical context to debates over contemporary fascism.”

Federico Finchelstein, New School for Social Research, author of "The Wannabe Fascists"

"A timely and much needed sober intervention in the debate about current-day ‘fascism’ and its historical roots. Fuentes Codera and Rodrigo do an excellent job in dissecting fascism as a historical phenomenon, its post-1945 transformations and current legacies."

Robert Gerwarth, University College Dublin

Fascism and the Global Far Right is not a complacent read. The authors have tested, and demolished, some commonplace ideas I had taken for granted.”

Sergio del Molino, journalist and author
