Latin American Art in the MALBA-Costantini Collection

Published in celebration of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba)’s twenty-fifth anniversary, this volume showcases one of the world’s leading collections of modern and contemporary Latin American art.

Beautifully designed, this volume is the first comprehensive catalogue exploring the totality of the Malba-Costantini Collection, which is unrivaled for its quality and breadth in the area of Latin American twentieth and twenty-first century art. It includes key works by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Tarsila do Amaral, Wifredo Lam, Antonio Berni, Xul Solar, Joaquín Torres-García, Lygia Clark, León Ferrari, Doris Salcedo, and others.

Since its inception in 2001, Malba has become a leading institution for the study and display of modern and contemporary Latin American art. Today, the Malba holdings, combined with the Eduardo F. Costantini Collection—which has been expanded following the recent acquisition of the Daros Latinamerica Collection—comprise more than 3,000 works of art by artists from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, and Chile, among other countries.

This volume presents the collection through a chronological structure of five chapters, tracing artistic developments from the early Latin American avant-garde to contemporary practices. Eighteen newly commissioned essays by leading scholars provide critical perspectives on the collection’s historical scope, cultural contexts, and ongoing relevance, alongside a thorough introduction by writer, editor, and curator Rodrigo Moura, and a foreword by Eduardo Costantini.
